Internships in video game journalism are a thousand times worse in that they’re incredibly difficult to find and tend to be extremely exclusive. Meaning your chances of getting one can be fairly slim, especially if you have no previous experience or credentials.

GameSkinny offers an internship program that rotates on a monthly basis, with each phase lasting four weeks.

As internship manager, I take a great deal of pride in our internship program, which is built around bettering not only your knowledge of the current industry, but also around bettering your writing and editing skills–which are essential to landing any kind of journalism career, especially in video games.

Experience, Portfolio Building & References - This program provides relevant experience that looks great on any resume and can help further you in your career. We offer great references to our interns when they go job hunting and, from time to time, offer them positions at GameSkinny. Exclusives - Many of our teams have received exclusive interviews with developers and industry figures, and that experience can help give you a leg up when applying for any journalism or writing position. Perks - Though this opportunity is currently unpaid, teams who perform exceptionally well receive  awesome prizes on a weekly basis. GameSkinny can also help our interns receive media passes to cover industry events and conventions like PAX and Dragon*Con. Learn Multiple Roles - Interns who participate and do well can repeat as many phases as they like to learn additional skills, switching positions on their teams and gaining knowledge in other fields like social media and managing others. Leadership Experience - Team leader roles are a step in the ladder to success–team leaders have the opportunity to run their own teams and gain managerial experience that will impress employers in the future.

Aside from all of this professional experience, I’ve personally seen teams become great, hopefully lifelong friends who talk on a regular basis and share both their interests and their personal lives with each other. This program is an amazing way to meet people and make friends.

Alright, cool. What do I need to apply, and when can I send in my resume?

To apply for the GameSkinny internship program, a resume is required, and writing samples are strongly encouraged. If you don’t have any, that’s okay too–but they help. Applicants must be 18 years or older.

Skype accounts and access to Google Drive are also required.

Applications begin the week in between cycles. Currently, our applications are open for the Orzhov Phase, beginning July 8th.
