I had heard about GameSkinny through Sony Online Entertainment. They were doing a contest to go to SOE Live this year and to enter you had to create a post about 300 words long on why you were the best for the job of being the official Dragon’s Prophet Correspondent. I entered but then became a fan of the layout of the site. It is easy to find things to read about on here and I was impressed that every article came from us, the gamers. I haven’t really seen a site quite like this before.
Looking through a lot of articles, I stumbled upon the post made by Katy to become an intern in the Bastion phase. This was a chance for me to get a feel for what gaming journalism was all about on GameSkinny. So I applied, but I didn’t hear anything else until the weekend before the job was supposed to start. In fact, I thought I wasn’t picked because it was Saturday and the internship started Monday.
Of course, I was accepted and the next few weeks were life changing. I’m an English major but going into this internship, I wasn’t sure if gaming journalism was what I was going to set in stone as my future; now I do. For those who may be on the fence about joining the Orzhov phase, let me give you some advice:
DO IT! You will gain valuable experience. You may run into some team members that won’t keep up or have to leave due to some circumstances, but it will be something that you remember for the rest of your life.
Video games are my life. The games industry is my life. I hope that when I’m old and on my last breath, I will be able to look back and say that I had a voice in shaping the video games industry into a better one. My time as a GameSkinny intern is the first step for me in that direction and one day I will remember my first steps into the world of gaming journalism with appreciation for the chance.
