Game of Thrones star Lena Headey reveals what she thinks Cersei’s reaction is to meeting and seeing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in person for the first time. The show’s seventh season was a notable turning point in Game of Thrones for a number of reasons, most of which included the show’s adoption of a new, breakneck pace and travel times. However, the season also began bringing together a number of the series’ biggest characters for the first time, most importantly with the meeting between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Dany.
But in case the meeting between the King in the North and the Mother of Dragons wasn’t enough, the show went on to bring together almost every other main and supporting character still alive in its game-changing season 7 finale this past Sunday night. Perhaps no meeting was quite as silently volatile or hostile either, as the first time that Daenerys and Cersei Lannister locked eyes with each other, following the former’s show of force by arriving late on one of her Dragons.
While speaking with EW about the season 7 finale’s Dragonpit opening sequence, Headey opened up about what she thinks is going on inside Cersei’s mind when Dany finally arrives at the meeting:
For those who may not know or remember, the prophecy that Headey is referring to is the one that Maggy the Witch gave to Cersei when she was a young girl, and which was included as the opening scene of the show’s fifth season. Amongst other things - which included the prediction of all her children’s’ deaths - the prophecy also says that Cersei will only be the Queen for a time “then comes another - younger, more beautiful - to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.”
“I think she’s immediately envious because Daenerys is more beautiful and younger than she is and the prophecy says somebody younger and more beautiful will take her place so I’m sure that’s at the forefront of her mind. And Tyrion is her Hand, so she couldn’t be any worse.”
As book readers and attentive show fans are aware, Maggy’s prophecy has more or less shaped every decision that Cersei makes, which is why she’s already distasteful towards Dany before she even really meets with her. Considering that the season 7 finale also ended with Cersei lying to both Jon and Dany about her plans to help them fight the White Walker and Night King - while secretly planning to stab them in the back with Euron Greyjoy and The Golden Company - it’s clear that the two characters’ already testy relationship will only grow worse from hereon out. And unfortunately for Cersei, there are practically no more characters now who will be willing to try and protect her from Dany’s wrath, whenever she learns of Cersei’s trickery in the next season.
Game of Thrones returns for its eighth and final season sometime in 2018 or 2019.
