Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Game of Thrones
A water bottle makes a cameo in the final episode of Game of Thrones. HBO’s fantastical series based on George R.R. Martin’s novel series titled A Song of Ice and Fire came to an end this Sunday with an 80-minute episode. In the outing, the conflict regarding who will sit on the Iron Throne was finally settled with Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) claiming the position of the ruler of Westeros. Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) pursuit of the throne ended tragically with getting murdered by Jon Snow (Kit Harington) after the mass murder she committed in the show’s penultimate outing titled “The Bells.” As the country gets back on its feet after the brutal war for power, a disposable plastic bottle was spotted in one of the episode’s key moments.
Fans have had a couple of technical issues in this season’s Game of Thrones. Episode 3 titled “The Long Night” was just too dark to know what’s going on - a shame considering that they spent a lot of time and effort staging and filming the showdown between the living and the Night King and the White Walkers. The defensive response from the cinematographer Fabian Wagner made the issue worse as he suggested that fans need to manually calibrate their TVs to be able to properly watch the show. Things were a bit brighter come episode 4 titled “The Last of Starks,” but the Starbucks debacle took over conversations after fans spotted what looks like a coffee cup left on the table during the outing’s celebratory dinner sequence. The show’s producers admitted to their mistake, but a similar thing happened in the show’s final episode.
Spotted by Twitter user with the handle @bethisloco is a clear plastic bottle during the assembly of the most powerful people in Westeros to pick a new ruler in Game of Thrones. In the footage shown on the social media site, fans can see it near the the foot of Sam’s (John Bradley) chair. Some fans in the comment section find this hilarious, joking that it might have been a hot day when the scene was filmed. Others, meanwhile, took it as evidence on how this season was simply rushed - a common criticism throughout the show’s final six episodes. Watch the clip below:
The final season of Game of Thrones has spawned various reactions from loyal viewers. With the series finale still fresh in people’s minds, fans are actively discussing how its final outing panned out for their favorite characters. Some narrative choices are met negatively, particularly Bran ultimately ending up as the King of Westeros when he’s barely made any character progress in the last couple of seasons and was just basically a plot device. Others, meanwhile, made people content like Sansa (Sophie Turner) ending up as the Queen of the North and Ghost getting that much-clamored pet from Jon. Regardless of people’s personal feelings towards it, it seems like the general consensus is that it could’ve played better if season 8 had the traditional 10 episodes.
It’s curious if the show will address the plastic water bottle the same way they did with the Starbucks coffee cup considering that the show is now over. Nevertheless, for the amount of time that they spent in production and post-production, it feels sloppy for them to miss these two out-of-place details. Obviously, it doesn’t affect the narrative in any way, but it sort of reinforces the feeling that they may have rushed working on Game of Thrones’ final season. For the conversation about the end of arguably one of the best TV shows in recent memory to be infiltrated by this kind mishap is a shame.
