[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Game of Thrones ahead.]

-

Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones, is sure that Gendry will return. Joe Dempsie made a triumphant comeback as Robert Baratheon’s bastard son in Game of Thrones season 7, but was notable by his absence in the epic season finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf”.

Gendry was left in a sorry state at the end of the previous episode, “Beyond the Wall”. Therein, he was charged with running back to Eastwatch to send a raven to Daenerys about the White Walkers. Gendry succeeded in his task, fudging the timeline and earning the show some serious criticism in the process. Gendry was barely conscious upon reaching The Wall, and he hasn’t been seen since. What gives?

Cunningham, in an interview with Business Insider, has stepped forward to provide an answer to that question. Davos’ fatherly relationship with Gendry was enjoyably reignited in season 7 and, thankfully, it sounds like fans haven’t seen the last of it. Here’s what Cunningham said on the topic of Gendry’s future:

Gendry having some recovery time makes perfect sense. Even if he was fit and healthy by the time that Jon Snow and Daenerys departed for King’s Landing, it would make sense for the gang to leave Gendry behind. After all, despite having claimed The Iron Throne for herself, Lena Headey’s Cersei Lannister is surely still harboring resentment for her ex-husband’s extra-marital spawn. It was probably wise to keep Gendry away from that big meeting.

“Well I think he’s recovering from his various wounds and whatever. […] I’m sure we haven’t heard the end of Gendry on this. But I haven’t seen any scripts, and I don’t even know the start date of next season, nevermind having read anything, so I’m speculating as much as anybody else.”

“I’d be more worried about ‘Where is Tormund?’ at the end of that last episode”, Cunningham added. And he’s got a point. After that stunning closing scene, where the Night King burned a hole in The Wall at Eastwatch, it’s unclear if Kristofer Hivju’s Tormund Giantsbane and Richard Dormer’s Beric Dondarrion lived to tell the tale.

These aren’t the only questions that fans will be waiting months for answers to. There’s also the matter of why Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion was looking so worried during Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen’s late night boat meet-up. It also remains to be seen how Jon’s real heritage - and his birth name - will affect that particular union.

Game of Thrones season 8 starts filming this fall and will premiere in late 2018/early 2019.
