The trailer for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones has broken one of HBO’s previous records. Adapting George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, Game of Thrones focuses on several different noble families who are fighting to control Westeros. The series has been wildly popular since the first season aired in 2011, but 2019 will mark the end of the series.
In order to keep the anticipation high for the upcoming season, HBO has slowly started to release marketing material for season 8. One of the first glimpses of season 8 was an HBO 2019 preview that showcased some of their new and returning shows for the year. EW has published some images from Game of Thrones season 8, as well as given the series 16 different covers featuring the main characters of the show. In January, HBO released the first teaser trailer for Game of Thrones season 8 and earlier this week, they released a new action packed trailer for the final season. Now, it looks like the newest trailer has broken a record for HBO.
According to Deadline, season 8 of Game of Thrones has already started to break records, given that the trailer hit 81 million views in 24 hours. That number is the most views HBO has ever gotten on one of their TV trailers within 24 hours. Previously, the trailer for Game of Thrones season 7 held this record at 61 million views, however season 8 has managed to beat that by 20 million views.
HBO has had problems with spoilers leaking for Game of Thrones in the past, and even entire episodes leaking early, but the premium cable service isn’t playing any games when it comes to their final season. HBO even used high-tech drones to prevent set photos from leaking, forcing fans to simply rely on official marketing material for new Game of Thrones information. Needless to say, by the time this new trailer was released, fans had been itching for more Game of Thrones for quite some time.
The last episode of season 7 debuted in August 2017, so fans have been waiting over a year to just get a glimpse of what is in store for season 8. Previous marketing material has given away little to no details about the story for this upcoming season, but this newest trailer truly is the best look fans have gotten at the final season of Game of Thrones so far. Given the massive popularity and fan base the show has built over the years, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that this trailer has broken one of HBO’s records.
