Mild SPOILERS for Game of Thrones season 8 ahead.
New Game of Thrones season 8 set photos hint at a confrontation between Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister. HBO’s juggernaut hit is currently in production for its eighth and final season that will consist of six, longer episodes. Filming is expected to last until this summer, with season 8 slated to premiere at some point in 2019. With a longer wait time than usual between seasons of Game of Thrones and the show’s conclusion now on the immediate horizon, set photo leaks like these are quite helpful when it comes to keeping fans satisfied.
The last time the two were together, Jon did his best to convince Cersei to set aside their differences and come together, now that a shared enemy is coming to Westeros in the form of the Night King (who has his own dragon, no less). He even backed up his claim by showing Cersei a White Walker, proving that he was telling the truth. But ever the political player and despite an impassioned speech from Tyrion, Cersei led everyone to believe that she will join them in the upcoming battle, only to later reveal that she doesn’t even have any intention of sending her army - leaving her Iron Throne rivals to fight on their own.
Now, Jon and Cersei have reunited, albeit in a more intimate setting, as revealed in by new photos from the Dubrovnik, Croatia set of Game of Thrones shared by Digital Spy. It’s difficult to gauge what exactly is happening in these images beyond that. Perhaps Jon is making a last ditch effort to explain to Cersei how important it is that they all come together to battle the Night King, now that the wall has finally come down. It’s also possible that Jamie revealed his sister’s true plan after the two had a falling out, prompting the former to leave King’s Landing.
However, with Jon’s true heritage having been fully revealed, some fans are wondering whether this meeting with Cersei is part of a ploy against the Khaleesi (also known as Jon’s aunt Dany now). The Mother of Dragons has been adamant about claiming the Iron Throne and not sharing it with anyone else, operating on the notion that she is the rightful leader of Westeros. It will also be interesting how she reacts to the news that Jon, his nephew/new lover, also has a strong case as the real rightful heir to Westeros’ highest seat of power. Of course, the White Walkers will presumably continue to make their way to King’s Landing, while all of this is going on.
Game of Thrones season 7 broke viewership record week after week and with all the hype that is building towards the final season, it’s good to know that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are taking their time to wrap all of these various plot threads and storylines up in a tidy and thematically satisfying fashion. The longer wait time also gives everyone else a chance to revisit previous seasons of the series, in order to refreshen their memories and prepare for the show’s ending.
