HBO’s Game of Thrones has become known for its brutality by featuring a large amount of wanton violence, a fair amount of sex, and an uncomfortable amount of sexual violence. For fans of the show, it has also become known for its vague teasers and promos calculated to arouse viewers’ interest without giving away any plot details.
While those teasers certainly get people talking about the show, there has not been much interactivity to them. With the marketing campaign for season 6, though, that has changed. Fans are being told to “Tweet at @GameofThrones using #HouseStark, #HouseLannister, or #HouseTargaryen for more on Season 6,” with teaser trailers being given as their reward.
The votes are being tallied up, with House Stark in the lead so far. For those without a Twitter account, the teasers are still available. HBO has revealed a collection of the three of them, one for each house fans are being prompted to support, and we’ve got them below as well:
As expected, the teasers don’t give any plot away. In fact, they don’t show any actual footage from the show. They do all have ominous snippets of audio accompanying them, though, and serve to reassure viewers that yes, season 6 will be just as dark and violent as the five seasons before it. Fans of House Stark are treated to an audio clip of all-around awful person Ramsay Bolton declaring, “Winterfell is mine. Come and see.” For House Lannister, the High Sparrow promises, “Every one of us is poor powerless, and yet together we can overthrow an empire.” House Targaryen’s teaser is not any more chipper than the others, with an unknown Dothraki sneering, “You are nobody, the millionth of your name, Queen of Nothing.”
What all three houses have in common is that they have some powerful enemies who reared their heads in season 5 and will continue to cause untold pain and hardship in season 6. In other words, those who thought that season 6 might find the show changing its tone and having all of the various factions on Westeros getting along and hugging things out are going to be sorely disappointed. There will no doubt be some spectacular battles, some shocking deaths, and if actress Emilia Clarke is to be believed, some of the biggest TV moments ever.
While the previously-released season 6 poster of a bloodied Jon Snow seems like a spoiler for his return in some form or another, much of the rest of the season’s plot is unknown. After all, the show is starting to outpace its source books by this point, and that fact combined with the show’s veering off into its own territory for a number of different subplots means that avid readers of the novels will no longer have a leg up in knowing all of the major plot points to come. Everyone will be in the same boat when watching the upcoming season, so the surprises will have a bigger impact than ever.
Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere on Sunday, April 24th, 2016 on HBO.
