[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Game of Thrones ahead.]
-
After more than 10 months of uncertainty, the character of Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) was brought back to life on Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones season 6, titled ‘Home.’
As predicted by many fans of the HBO fantasy series, based on clues from the A Song of Ice and Fire source books and previous episodes of the TV show alike, Jon was resurrected after he was murdered during a mutiny at The Wall. How? Well, with a little help from the Red Priestess Melisandre (Carice Van Houten), as well as the god R’hllor (The Lord of Light).
Now, a group of Game of Thrones fans, after having congregated on Reddit, have managed to translate the prayer that returned the (possible) bastard son of Ned Stark to the ranks of the living.
A Redditor named “Mecho,” posting to the r/asoiaf subreddit, used something called the High Valyrian Vocabulary Page to translate the last line of the prayer. Other Reddit users filled in the rest, and also discovered that the incantation was similar to the one that brought Beric Dondarrion back to life back in Game of Thrones season 3 - and also, that High Valyrian and Norwegian have more linguistic similarity than you’d think. Here’s the whole thing, via Polygon:
Zyhys oñoso jehikagon Aeksiot epi, se gis hen syndrorro jemagon.
“We ask the Lord to shine his light, and lead a soul out of darkness.”
Zyhys perzys stepagon Aeksio Oño jorepi, se morghultas lys qelitsos sikagon.
“We beg the Lord to share his fire, and light a candle that has gone out.”
Hen syndrorro, oños. Hen ñuqir, perzys. Hen morghot, glaeson.
“From darkness, light. From ashes, fire. From death, life.”
Sure, the turn of events that led Melisandre to bring Jon back from the dead was telegraphed, and sort of easily predicted by most fans of the series, whether they’re book readers or not. That’s not even taking into account various photos from the Season 6 set that appeared to show Harington as an active member of the cast.
But even so, bringing Jon back makes a whole lot more sense plot-wise than leaving him dead, whether that pertains to the White Walkers/Wildlings/Night’s Watch part of the plot, to the machinations at Winterfell, or to what way may be about to learn about Jon’s parentage, via the Bran Stark/Three-Eyed Raven storyline. Jon Snow is likely hugely important to the endgame of Game of Thrones, even if it took some predictable plotting to get him there.
Game of Thrones season 6 will continue with ‘Oathbreaker’ @9pm on Sunday, May 8th.
