Season 6 of HBO’s wildly successful fantasy TV series, Game of Thrones, is just on the horizon, and with it (hopefully) the answers to several major questions that have left fans guessing since the final shot of season 5. Westeros hangs in the balance as the Lannisters’ reign continues to crumble, Daenerys Targaryen has been captured by the Dothraki, and Jon Snow was last seen covered in blood, his fate becoming one of the most talked-about moments on TV over the past year.

In an all-new set of clips released from the upcoming Game of Thrones season 6 premiere, we catch up with a few of the show’s central characters – including Cersei Lannister, Sansa Stark, and Daenerys Targaryen – as they brave the chaos left in the wake of last season’s events. This all follows the recently-unveiled trailer for season 6 that brought back old foes - and made the threat facing Westeros from The North as clear as ice (forgive the wording).

The first of these Game of Thrones season 6 clips is an emotional moment between Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) after the death of their daughter Myrcella. As ever, Headey delivers a quietly powerful performance as Cersei, her inner demons on display even when she’s in mourning. Next, we have a clip where Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) gets her first look at Vaes Dothrak, the gigantic desert city that her Dothraki captors have brought her to for judgment. The Dothraki greet her as though to taunt her, addressing her as their Khaleesi and making their intentions vague enough to cause worry. Finally, the last clip features Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Theon/Reek (Alfie Allen) desperately running from Ramsay’s hounds in another callback to the character’s malicious hunting practices in Game of Thrones season past (and the show’s own source material).

Season 6 is set to veer away from the path of the book series that inspired the show, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, due to the fact that the Game of Thrones TV show’s story has now officially begun to branch out farther than the published books. With no delivery date on the upcoming novel installment, the TV series will move forward under the guidance of show-runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The first episode of the season is titled “The Red Woman” and will air on April 24.

This particular set of Game of Thrones clips speaks volumes about how the paths of so many characters have evolved, diverged, and even come full-circle (in a sense) by the time season 6 gets underway. The Lannisters dealing with the consequences of their evils may only fuel the fire of Cerise’s madness - and while the quiet moment was still shared by an incestuous pair of twins, the clip from that story thread does a wonderful job showing off the dire consequences  set by the show – where so often, the innocent (Myrcella, in this case) are made to suffer in order to further the suffering of those who are truly guilty.

Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere on HBO on April 24th, 2016.
