Game of Thrones is over, and one of the characters who survived the show was Tyrion Lannister, who still never managed to finish his series-long joke. His last scene in the series finale shows Tyrion seated at the head of the Small Council, as Hand to King Bran the Broken, speaking with Master of Coin (Bronn), Master of Ships (Davos), Commander of the Kingsguard (Brienne), and Grand Maester (Sam Tarly). As the Council debates the importance of sewers, ships, and brothels, Tyrion chimes in at the end with, “I once brought a jackass and a honeycomb into a brothel…” Some fans may have thought that this was nothing other than Tyrion being his usual glib self, but committed fans know that this has been a running joke for the character since season 1, and one has actually figured out the punchline.

Tyrion’s Jackass and a Honeycomb line has appeared twice before in Game of  Thrones. The first time, it popped up in his “confession” to Lysa Arryn and Catelyn Stark, while on trial in the Eyrie in season 1. In this scene, the women are trying to get him to confess to trying to kill Bran, and instead, he “confesses” to every hilarious a minor thing he has ever done in his life. He’s just getting to his confession about the jackass, the honeycomb, and the brothel when Lysa cuts him off. Interestingly, this is also where he meets Bronn - making the Master of Coin both the first and the last person in the series to hear this setup. The second time that the setup appears in the series is in season 6, when Tyrion, Missandei, and Grey Worm are together in Meereen, and Tyrion is trying to teach them to drink and tell jokes. Again, he is cut off, although this time it’s the attacking Masters that do it.

Since the joke was first mentioned, fans have been trying to guess the punchline, but the general favorite comes from Reddit user Retro21:

This may not be the official end of the joke (and it’s not known whether an official punchline will be delivered), but it’s probably as good as fans are going to get - and it’s almost perfect. For one thing, it fits perfectly with Tyrion’s bawdy sense of humor as well as his razor-sharp wit. It also fits with the love of brothels that he was known for earlier in the series, and of course, his multiple references to dwarf jokes. It’s well-established that Tyrion isn’t a fan of height jokes; however, he definitely defends his size on more than one occasion. Fans may remember when he was taken by slavers while traveling with Jorah, and when they suggested cutting off his member because “dwarf penis” was valuable, he leapt in to say that unless it was still attached to him, no one would know from size alone that it belonged to a dwarf. A joke about a well-endowed dwarf in a brothel? Peak Tyrion.

Tyrion walks into a brothel with a honeycomb and a jackass.

Madame: What can we do for you?

Tyrion: I need a woman to lay with, for mine has left me.

Madame: Whatever for? And what’s with the honeycomb and the mule?

Tyrion: My woman found a genie in a bottle, and he granted her three wishes. The first was for a house fit for a queen, so he gave her this damn honeycomb. The second wish was that

she have the nicest ass in all the land, so he gave her this damn donkey…

Madame: And what about the third wish?

Tyrion: Well… she asked the genie to make my cock hang down past my knee.

Madame: Well that one’s not so bad, eh?

Tyrion: Not so bad!? I used to be six foot three!

It’s also worth noting that Tyrion retells the joke for each ruler/house he supports, and each time, it reveals a little about his mental and emotional state. The first, as a Lannister, telling it with arrogance and a little bit of anger to his captors - exactly who he was at the start: cocky, entitled, but with some real anger underneath. The second time, he tells it while on the Targaryen side, and he is animated, bright, happy - and hopeful. Finally, he tells it while Hand to King Bran the Broken - and he is subdued, seeming almost exhausted, but still trying to be himself and do the best he can. There couldn’t have been a better final line for last (and now tallest) Lannister in Game of Thrones.
