Cersei Lannister almost suffered a miscarriage in Game of Thrones season 7. HBO’s fantastical series created by Davide Benioff and D.B. Weiss based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels wrapped up its eight-season run last month. But it remains a favorite topic of conversation for fans especially how the series wrote the endgame for their favorite characters.
After years of intricate storytelling, Game of Thrones season 8 answered the show’s core question: who will sit on the Iron Throne. Turns out, following two catastrophic wars in Westeros just in the series’ final six episodes, it’s Bran Stark who ultimately becomes the king of the six kingdoms. Other fan-favorite characters had decent sendoffs, particularly the Starks: Arya sailed west to know what’s there; Sansa was crowned Queen in the North, like she always wanted; and Jon was back up North. The Lannisters, on the other hand, had a more tragic fate, with Tyrion the only surviving member after Jamie and Cersei died crushed by falling rocks in the Red Keep during the penultimate episode.
Unlike her brothers who had final personal arcs, however, Cersei was reduced to an observer for the latter part of Game of Thrones. But apparently, she was supposedly going to have an individual story for herself after Headey reveals that she was to suffer a miscarriage. Appearing at Munich Comic-Con, the actress said they filmed a scene in season 7 where she “lose[s] the baby and it was a really traumatic, great moment for Cersei.” Watch her talk about it during a panel in the video shared by Twitter user bb_cersei below:
Game of Thrones’ final season drew varying opinions with the way it handled its characters and tackled the remaining loose plot points. The most common criticism is that it was rushed, leading to an underwhelming end for an otherwise brilliant show. But hints of that bigger problem was peppered throughout season 7 as well, and Cersei’s arc effectively highlights this idea. In the past two seasons, she barely had anything to do in the show’s narrative, leading to an anti-climactic death that even Headey admitted to wanting a better one. This was a shame considering how rich the character was and how brilliant of an actress she is. Pushing through with the miscarriage scene could’ve given Cersei more to do in season 8 since everyone knows there’s nothing more important to her than her children.
It’s unclear what prompted Benioff and Weiss take out the said scene, but had it been kept, it would’ve set the stage for a more intense confrontation between Cersei and her detractors - if that was ever in the plan. It could’ve also saved fans from continuous speculating whether or not she was lying to her brothers about the said pregnancy. Yes, it was eventually confirmed at the very end but it didn’t have any bearing to Game of Thrones’ final season narrative.
