Game of Thrones actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright explains how Bran Stark’s powers really work, saying he doesn’t know ’everything’ there is know about the history of the show’s universe.
Having an equally troubled time as the rest of those downtrodden Starks, Bran had been thrown from a tower, left out in the cold for a whole season, and battled a frozen army of the undead while the Night King has made him his own pet project. The past two seasons of the popular fantasy epic have seen Bran take on the role of the new Three-Eyed Raven. But what does this actually mean for the Winterfell heir’s endgame on Game of Thrones?
The current iteration of Bran doesn’t look like he will be much use at the moment, as he blankly sits in the Godswood to stare into the past (and future). However, speaking to Cinema Blend, Hempstead-Wright explained what is going on in that impressive brain of his:
Remember that the season 7 finale finally revealed Jon Snow’s true parentage, meaning that the whole Tower of Joy debacle from the previous season was wrapped up with a Starkgaryen marriage. This meant that Jon had become romantically involved with his own aunt - though to be fair, incest has never exactly been a taboo subject on Game of Thrones. With Bran seeing this all laid out before him, it makes for some interesting theories about what he will do in Game of Thrones’ final six episodes.
“I think it wasn’t quite fully explained how Bran’s power works. It’s not that he knows absolutely everything already, it’s like he has a dictionary in front of him, or an encyclopedia with all of history, and he can look anything up. Like at the end when Samwell says ‘Oh, is this something you can see?’ Bran can go back and look at it and say ‘Oh yeah, that happened.’”
Given Bran’s recent boost in power, will a fully-formed purveyor of the future return in season 8? Fans have already seen him unravel Petyr Baelish’s web of lies, but there are still big questions over why Bran isn’t being as helpful as he seemingly could be. According to Hempstead-Wright, Bran’s status as a Raven in training means he isn’t holding out on key information, and is slowly learning how to control his powers:
In classic Game of Thrones fashion, no one really knows what is going on then. Still, seeing as Bran was outlined as one of George R.R. Martin’s “big five” in his original pitch for the saga, you can expect Hempstead-Wright to have plenty more to do when the show eventually returns in 2019.
“He hasn’t been the Three-Eyed Raven long enough to look through all of history in the way that Max von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven had to be in that cave for thousands of years and had been able to spend every single day exploring different parts of history, whereas Bran Stark is still only kind of looking at the important bits. It was more the fact that he didn’t know where to look, not that he was withholding. That’s officially how Bran’s power works.”
