Sansa Stark isn’t very lucky in love on Game Of Thrones. She is betrothed to Prince Joffrey in Season 1 of the hit HBO fantasy drama, only to have her dreams shattered when Joffrey executes her father and reveals his true colors. Sansa eventually escapes from the Lannisters’ clutches in Season 4, but finds herself in a worse position when she marries Ramsay Bolton.

Sansa survives unimaginable horrors and becomes Queen in the North in the show’s divisive finale. The Lady of Winterfell becomes one of Westeros’ most powerful political players and embraces her newfound autonomy. However, it would have been great to see Sansa find love with one of these characters in the series.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon Greyjoy grew up alongside Sansa and the rest of the Stark siblings. After the Greyjoy Rebellion, Ned brought Theon to Winterfell and raised him as his ward. Theon had hoped to marry Sansa in the books, and officially join the Stark family.

In the show, Theon saves Sansa from Ramsay and they both flee from the Boltons together. Theon returns to Winterfell in Season 8 and has a heartfelt but brief reunion with Sansa. If he had survived his encounter with the Night King, then maybe Theon could have been with the heiress to House Stark after all.

Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion and Sansa were forced to marry in Season 3 by Tywin Lannister. This is a seemingly devastating blow for Sansa, whose position as a hostage of House Lannister is solidified with her marriage. However, Tyrion turns out to be Sansa’s kindest suitor yet as he attempts to protect her from the horrors in King’s Landing.

Sansa learns from Littlefinger throughout the series and becomes one of Westeros’ most powerful political figures. She and Tyrion could have been a power couple if the Lannister hadn’t been preoccupied with Daenerys Targaryen’s plight.

Loras Tyrell

Sansa develops a crush on the well-liked and handsome knight Loras Tyrell in Season 3. Olenna and Margaery plot to marry Sansa to Loras and extend their power over the North. Tywin puts a stop to this by marrying Sansa to Tyrion and betrothing Loras to Cersei.

Loras and Sansa would have been a dysfunctional couple due to Loras’ sexuality, but they could have been powerful allies. Both characters hailed from two of Westeros’ oldest and most powerful houses, and Sansa would have rejoiced at having Margaery for a sister.

Brienne Of Tarth

Brienne of Tarth first appears in Season 2 of Game Of Thrones as a loyal follower of Renly Baratheon. After Renly’s death, Brienne swears fealty to Catelyn Stark. She vows to find and protect Catelyn’s daughters Sansa and Arya after the Stark matriarch is killed along with Robb during the Red Wedding.

Brienne finds Sansa in Season 5 and later becomes her sworn protector after saving her from the Boltons in Season 6. Brienne’s loyalty to Sansa never wavered, and the Queen in the North could have been happy with this union.

The Hound

The pairing of Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane is popular amongst some fans of the A Song Of Ice And Fire book series. The Hound, who is younger than this show counterpart, rescues Sansa during the riots of King’s Landing and offers to take her with him when he flees the Capitol. The two almost kiss, and Sansa thinks about this moment regularly afterward.

Sansa’s relationship with the Hound mirrors the tale of Beauty And The Beast, which writer George RR Martin adapted for television in 1987. The Hound may have been flawed but he protected both Stark sisters throughout the series.

Margaery Tyrell

Sansa first meets Margaery in Season 3 and is immediately dazzled by the Tyrell lady. Margaery and her grandmother Olenna press Sansa for details about Joffrey’s nature, and the Tyrells scheme to marry the seemingly sole surviving member of House Stark to Loras.

Margaery was manipulative but she seemed to genuinely care about Sansa. Sansa, in the books and show, is awed by Margaery’s grace and beauty. It would have been great to see Margaery survive the explosion of the Sept of Baelor and align with Sansa to cast Cersei down.

Dickon Tarly

Dickon was a minor character who appeared briefly in Game Of Thrones before meeting a fiery fate. The heir to House Tarly - and younger brother of Samwell - accompanies his father Randyll to King’s Landing to treat with Cersei. The Tarlys later betray the Tyrells only for Daenerys Targaryen to execute them with dragonfire.

If Dickon had lived then he could have been a useful ally for Sansa. Marrying Dickon would have united the North with one of the most powerful houses in the Reach, solidifying the Starks’ control of the Seven Kingdoms.

Jon Snow

Jon and Sansa grew up in Winterfell believing they were half-siblings. However, it is later revealed that Jon is Sansa’s cousin as he is the trueborn son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Marriage between cousins isn’t uncommon in Westeros and Jon and Sansa could have been the ultimate Northern power couple.

Jon and Sansa channeled heavy Ned and Catelyn vibes in Season 7 of Game Of Thrones. Sansa could have become Queen of Westeros if Jon had ascended the Iron Throne, or they could have alternatively ruled the North together.

Trystane Martell

Trystane Martell was a minor character who appeared briefly in Season 5 of Game Of Thrones. The Dornish heir is betrothed to Myrcella Baratheon, and the young lovers appear to be happy. Their happiness is short-lived, however, as they are both assassinated by the Sand Snakes.

Trystane seemed like a nice person who treated Myrcella with love and adoration, despite the tension between their families. He could have been a kind-hearted suitor for Sansa, uniting the Dornish army with House Stark.

Daenerys Targaryen

Sansa and Daenerys had a nonsensical rivalry in Game Of Thrones’ controversial final season. Many fans were hoping to see an alliance between the Dragon Queen and the Lady of Winterfell, especially after Daenerys and her forces defended Winterfell and the North from the Night King.

If Sansa had gone to Dragonstone to meet with Daenerys in Season 7 instead of Jon, then the show’s ending could have been completely different. Sansa’s political skills would have made her a much better Hand of the Queen than her former husband, Tyrion. Both characters share several similarities and could have been the queens that Westeros needed.
