For the past eight years, Game of Thrones has been one of the biggest shows for HBO, but unfortunately for fans, the series ended a few weeks ago. Fans had to wait almost two years for the eighth and final season, but season 8 didn’t go over well with a lot of people.
This season was also the shortest in Game of Thrones history, with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss only giving fans six episodes. Many fans were frustrated by the final season, mainly due to how rushed the story felt, but the final season of Game of Thrones still broke records for HBO. Despite the negative reception for season 8, the final season did spawn dozens of hilarious memes to poke fun at the show.
Here are 10 hilarious Game of Thrones memes from The Iron Throne!
Everything Leads Back To Ghost
One of the biggest things that upset fans in the final season of Game of Thrones was Jon Snow’s treatment of his direwolf Ghost. Ghost was extremely important to Snow in George R.R. Martin’s books and seemed to be in the show as well, until the episode “The Last of the Starks”.
In the episode, Jon is saying his goodbyes to his friends, but he basically ignores Ghost on his way out. In the final episode when Jon is sent back to the Wall, he is reunited with his old companion, which was one of the more satisfying parts of the finale. This meme crudely pastes Ghosts head on top of Thanos’ body, with the caption being Thanos’ line from Avengers: Endgame.
Bran’s Reason
The fact that Bran becomes King at the end of Game of Thrones irritated a lot of fans. Everybody had their own theories for who would end up on the Iron Throne, but many people were surprised when Bran was chosen. Tyrion said that Bran deserved the Throne since he had a great story, but fans thought there were several other characters that deserved the Iron Throne more.
When Tyrion is giving his speech on who should be the new ruler of Westeros, he asks Bran if he would even accept the position, to which Bran responds, “Why do you think I came all this way?”. This meme is relatable because, well, who hasn’t gone to an event before just to get some free food?
Grey Worm’s Super Speed
There were many conflicts in the final season of Game of Thrones, between the undead and the living, Cersei and Daenerys, and even Grey Worm and Jon Snow. Grey Worm and Jon’s rivalry started during the episode “The Bells” when Daenerys decides to burn down King’s Landing. In the finale, Jon sees that Grey Worm is about to execute captured Lannister soldiers and tries to stop him, which ultimately doesn’t work.
Jon heads to meet with Daenerys but when he gets to the top of the stairs, Grey Worm is suddenly there. This meme makes fun of the Game of Thrones showrunners since people often critique them for forgetting important story details.
Ellaria Sand’s Fate
With as crammed as the last season was, several minor characters were simply forgotten about. Two of these characters were Ellaria Sand and her daughter Tyene. The last time we saw these characters, Cersei had locked them both in the dungeon of King’s Landing to get revenge for Myrcella.
Since Daenerys utterly destroyed everything in the Red Keep, it’s safe to assume that Ellaria didn’t survive, but fans don’t know for sure. When Tyrion is arrested by Daenerys, he isn’t kept in the Dungeon, probably because it was destroyed, but this meme about Ellaria Sand’s fate is funny none the less.
Yet Another Failed Finale
When it comes to ending a series as beloved as Game of Thrones, it’s almost impossible to please everyone. Many shows have had incredible runs for years, but end up falling flat with the final season. That was certainly the case with Game of Thrones, but it was the hardly the first show that has happened to.
Beloved shows like How I Met Your Mother, Lost, and Dexter are prime examples of shows that let their fans down. This meme shows Tom from Tom and Jerrybeing dragged away by other cats, and the labels on their back need no explanation.
Don’t Tell Mom!
After Daenerys ignored the bells at the Red Keep and burnt everybody to a crisp, it was clear that she had to go. Everybody had their predictions on who was going to kill the Dragon Queen, but it ended up being her former lover… and nephew… Jon Snow.
Many people were angered with the Mad Queen twist, but her character arc could have been somewhat redeemed if she would have gotten a satisfying death. Unfortunately Game of Thrones went with a cliché death for Daenerys Targaryen, but it resulted in a hilarious meme that anybody with siblings will understand.
The Book Of Brothers
The Book of Brothers, or The White Book, was a part of Game of Thrones lore introduced in season 4. The book keeps a record of every knight in the Kingsguard, dating all the way back to the reign of Aegon I Targaryen. After Brienne of Tarth is named Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, she finishes Jamie Lannister’s page in the Book of Brothers.
While there are plenty of memes about what Brienne should have written, other people were more concerned that the pages in the book certainly wouldn’t have been dry when the shut it. In fact, many people probably reacted the same way Ellaria Sand reacted when Oberyn’s head was crushed by The Mountain.
“You Maniacs! You Blew It Up!”
Many character arcs in Game of Thrones were unsatisfying thanks to the final season, but many people enjoyed what happened with Arya Stark. At the end of the series, it is revealed that she is going to go explore and find out what is west of Westeros.
Many people want to see a pirate Arya spinoff and even though that is unlikely to happen, Arya’s ending opened the door for some entertaining memes. This meme jokes that Arya will discover the Statue of Liberty after a few months of exploring. The joke is a reference to the ending of the 1968 Planet of the Apes, which would certainly make for a crazy Game of Thrones crossover.
Waiting for the right moment
Even though Jon did what was necessary when it came to killing Daenerys, he got the short end of the stick and was sent back to the Wall. Daenerys turned a lot of people against her when she murdered innocent women and children in the Red Keep, but Grey Worm was willing to follow Daenerys to the end of the Earth.
Since Jon was the one to kill her, it only made sense that Grey Worm would have wanted Jon to be imprisoned or executed. With Bran the king, he makes the decision to send Jon back to the Wall rather than executing him, but many probably would have liked this scenario more.
The End Of An Era
While many fans were disappointed with the final season of Game of Thrones, most still didn’t want the show to end. That being said, the show will be getting a prequel series, under the working title Bloodmoon, that will start filming this month.
Even though more Game of Thrones is coming in the form of a prequel, fans will have to wait quite some time for the series to be released. In the meantime, this is likely how people will be feeling every Sunday until HBO comes out with a new show to replace the departed Game of Thrones.
