WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Game Night.

Game Night screenwriter Mark Perez said in a new interview that he would “love” to make sequels to the well-received comedy-mystery down the road, if the opportunity arises. To be certain, the movie’s unique premise - a murder mystery game-turned-actual kidnapping mystery that fakes out an unwitting group of friends - is the brainchild of Perez and producer John Davis.

The mostly-praised Game Night is off to a good start with an 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. And despite living in the shadow of Marvel’s Black Panther, it earned a solid $21.8 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend as it looks to recoup its estimated $37 million production budget. If the dark comedy can go on a run over the next month, it could earn itself a sequel for Warner Bros., which is exactly what Perez hopes happens.

Speaking to THR in a new Q&A, Perez was asked about the possibility of making a direct sequel to Game Night, or even a “spiritual sequel.” While Perez sounds like he’d be satisfied if just the original Game Night is a success, he’d surely be on board to make more of them if there turns out to be a demand for it. Here’s how he explained his thoughts on Game Night sequels:

“It would be great to have sequels. Super titles like Game Night or specific titles like that, feel genetically built to have sequels. That would mean the movie did well and that’s all I really care about at this stage. It’s like players who are playing in the playoffs and aren’t thinking about the Super Bowl, but they are really thinking about the Super Bowl. Of course I’d love for there to be many sequels and getting these characters to do other crazy things would be unbelievable. But for right now i think it’s a really cool, interesting movie and there are so many less comedies these days and I always cheer for comedy and I love it so much that I hope people see it.”

Game Night may be about an is-it-real-or-fake murder mystery, with some violence and subversive twists sprinkled in. But, ultimately, the main players from the cast escape alive with only a few scrapes (and one gun-shot wound). Jason Bateman’s Max and Rachel McAdams’ Annie both survive, as do their cop friend Gary (Jesse Plemons) and Max’s shady brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler). So, if Perez and co-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wanted to make a follow-up with the same cast, they could definitely pull it off.

Still, the premise of Game Night could also allow for the aforementioned “spiritual sequels,” starting fresh with a new cast and different kind of game-night-gone-wrong. But the current Game Night movie also leaves the possibility for its own sequel wide open with its ending. If it’s a commercial success, then fans might get a round two. And it appears that Perez would be quite interested in penning a new chapter for the characters he’s created.

The concern that Perez and Warner Bros. would face with further Game Night movies is diminishing returns. The plot of the first one is an original idea that could feel less original with each passing addition to the series. But for now, Game Night has hit the ground running amid stiff competition at the box office, and the potential for sequels could be looming.
