Although Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. officially began their DC Comics Extended Universe with Man of Steel in 2013, the release of this year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was a major stepping stone to the slate of upcoming films planned in this superhero franchise. However, the mixed reactions to Batman V Superman and the film’s box office dropoff have led many to wonder about whether it would impact the DCEU slate, and if so, in what way. For instance, certain reports about reshoots on the next DCEU film, Suicide Squad, have claimed Warner Bros. asked director David Ayer to make sure the movie has a somewhat lighter tone - with many speculating this is a response to criticisms of Batman V Superman’s darker tone.

Furthermore, though it hasn’t been confirmed as an answer to the positive reception of Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) in Batman V Superman, Warner Bros. did recently move up the premiere date for the superheroine’s solo outing, Wonder Woman. Now, Gadot has teased the tone fans can expect from the superhero’s standalone feature and how her character will be different than in Batman V Superman.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Gadot reiterated that the Diana of Wonder Woman will be much more naive than the version of the character viewers saw in Batman V Superman: “She’s this young idealist. She’s pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you’ve seen.”

Additionally, the actress spoke on the tone of the film and its coming-of-age story:

“In Batman V Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. … It’s very interesting. It has moments of humour, but it’s pretty dark. We all saw before the beautiful coming of age of Batman, Spider-Man, Superman. We don’t know anything about Wonder Woman.”

The dark tone of Jenkins’ Wonder Woman film seems to fit in with the larger DCEU established by Warner Bros. and Snyder, who, along with the team of filmmakers acting as architects of the film universe, have worked to create more serious versions of these iconic DC heroes. But, while Wonder Woman will undoubtedly fit into the DCEU in terms of its tone, Gadot’s comments do seem to indicate the film will balance its serious tone with moments of levity. Additionally, as Diana’s coming-of-age story takes center stage, the character’s own balance of kindness and skill as a warrior will be a main focus of Wonder Woman.

So, while certain criticisms surrounding Batman V Superman - such as its dark tone and it perhaps sacrificing its own story for the sake of setting up the DCEU film slate - have caused some to wonder how these reactions will affect upcoming DC movies, Gadot’s comments seem to hint that Wonder Woman will be an exciting entry in the universe. It seems Wonder Woman will fit into the tone of Warner Bros.’s universe while exploring the character of Diana Prince in a manner that will be compelling to fans.

Certainly, following the hero’s introduction in Batman V Superman, Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is one of the more anticipated features on the DCEU release schedule. But, it remains to be seen whether Wonder Woman will live up to the anticipation many have for the solo superheroine outing until Jenkins’ movie debuts in 2017.
