The G.I. Joe spinoff movie Snake Eyes is looking to start filming in late spring 2019. Debuting in 1982, the character Snake Eyes has become a prominent member on the G.I. Joe unit and a fan favorite character since his first appearance and over the years has shown up in a number of comic books, video games, and movies.
In 2009, Paramount Pictures brought the first live-action version of Snake Eyes to life with their film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The character was played by Ray Park, who would also return for the sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013. Back in May it was revealed that Paramount was giving Snake Eyes a spinoff movie, with Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) writing the script. Robert Schwentke will be directing the film, and Paramount and Allspark Pictures have given the film a spring 2020 release date. Now it appears that Paramount has also set a filming start date for Snake Eyes.
According to The Hashtag Show, Paramount is aiming to start filming the Snake Eyes origin movie in late spring of 2019. Beginning to film around this time should give Paramount an adequate amount of time for post-production before the film is released in 2020. While things are starting to piece together for the film, Snake Eyes doesn’t have a cast just yet, but Ray Park will not return to the role.
With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many movie studios are hoping to create their own successful cinematic universe. While Paramount is hoping to get the Transformers franchise back on the right track with Bumblebee, they are also looking to turn more Hasbro toys into franchises such as Micronauts, M.A.S.K., and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. Some people even think that Bumblebee will be the beginning of the Hasbro shared universe by introducing John Cena’s character as the first G.I. Joe.
It makes sense why Paramount would want their own big cinematic universe, and creating a shared universe of the Hasbro toys seems like the way to go. The Transformers movies that have already been released have made a ton of money for the studio, and nostalgia is often a powerful tool when it comes to creating successful films. While G.I. Joe has formed a huge fan base ever since Hasbro created their first toyline, Snake Eyes is often seen as one of the most popular G.I. Joe characters. Even though details surround Snake Eyes are minuscule right now, it seems like Paramount is still making progress with the film.
