Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek and Tatiana Maslany all joined the cast of Pose. While Ryan Murphy has been making television shows since the late ’90s, in recent years he seems to have found a niche with anthology series. American Horror Story is currently in its seventh season with Cult. American Crime Story had a successful first season with its depiction of the OJ Simpson trial, and new seasons based on the murder of Gianni Versace, the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, and the Monica Lewinsky scandal are all in the works. Feud also had a successful enough first season to warrant a second being created, about Prince Charles and Princess Di.
Now Murphy is looking to return to a more serialized format, where he previously found success with shows such as Nip/Tuck and Glee. His latest outings in this more traditional format have not gone very well, with sitcom The New Normal and horror comedy Scream Queens both canceled rather quickly. Still, he is trying again with Pose, a series about New York City in the 1980s. Pose recently made the news with the announcement that it had the largest transgender cast of any scripted series on TV.
And now FX has announced a few more cast members, people who should be familiar to TV fans. Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek and Tatiana Maslany have all been cast on the series.
Peters is in Murphy’s regular troupe of actors, having appeared on all seven seasons of American Horror Story. Currently on Cult Peters is playing cult leader Kai, as well as several other historical cult leaders, including Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and Andy Warhol. Mara received an Emmy nomination for her work as Zoe Barnes on the first season of House of Cards. The two of them will play a couple from New Jersey - Stan and Patty - who become entranced by the glitz and glamour of New York City in 1986.
Van Der Beek of course became a household name playing the title role on the teen drama series Dawson’s Creek. Since then he has also starred on the series Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and CSI Cyber. He will play Stan’s boss Matt on Pose, a financial kingpin. And Maslany is an Emmy winner for playing about 2/3 of the main characters on the sci-fi series Orphan Black. She will play a dance instructor who takes an interest in the character Swain, played by the previously announced Ryan Jamaal. Her dances will be choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
