Beloved sitcom Full House ran for eight seasons in the late ’80s/early ’90s as fans watched the Tanner family led by Danny (Bob Saget), his friend Joey (Dave Coulier), and brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) - they were later joined by Becky (Lori Loughlin) when she married Jesse. Now, though it was once an April Fool’s Day joke here at Screen Rant, Netflix is continuing to follow the Tanners with the sequel sitcom, Fuller House. The series will be a continuation of sorts, following the next generation of the family, led by eldest Tanner daughter D.J. (returning star Candace Cameron Bure).
Fuller House will debut on Netflix at the end of February and the streaming service began a major promotional push for the sitcom, starting with a new logo - reminiscent of the title card for Full House - and promos teasing the Tanner’s San Francisco home as well as the new generation of parents. Now, the first cast photo and images from the premiere episode have been released.
People unveiled the publication’s cover photo of the returning stars, as well as the first cast photo for Fuller House. The series will follow D.J., a now-widowed mother of three, who moves in with her younger sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber). The three women will work together to raise D.J.’s sons Jackson (Michael Campion), Max (Elias Harder), baby Tommy (Dashiell and Fox Messitt) and Kimmy’s daughter, Ramona (Soni Bringas) in their blended family.
Talking about returning to their characters from Full House, Coulier said, “It’s surreal being back … It shouldn’t be this much fun.” Additionally, Stamos talked about the ease with which many of the cast members returned to their previous roles: “We never stopped loving each other. That magic you saw? It’s still there because it never stopped from the day that we ended the show.”
In addition to the cast photo and cover, People released four stills from the premiere episode of Fuller House. According to Sweetin, Fuller House will be reminiscent of Full House, but “we bring a real modern feel to it and don’t try to recreate the ’80s family sitcom.” The photos mainly focus on Sweetin’s character along with Bure and Barber’s, though both the older and younger generations of the family also appear.
Although many original Full House stars were eager to reprise their roles for Fuller House, there has been notable controversy surrounding the return of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who together portrayed youngest Tanner daughter Michelle. Shortly after Fuller House was announced, there were conflicting statements about whether the Olsen twins had heard about the sequel series, and rumors about their involvement continued to circulate. Most recently, Stamos said they hadn’t reprised their roles because they didn’t want to return to acting - though his previous statements hinted at other motivations - and instead the show unsuccessfully attempted to bring in their younger sister Elizabeth Olsen (Godzilla, Avengers: Age of Ultron).
Still, despite the rumors and varying statements surrounding the Olsen twins’ return, the cast members that will reprise their roles for Fuller House seem genuinely excited about continuing the story of the Tanner family and welcoming in a new generation of viewers. Whether the show will be successful in capturing the hearts of fans and new viewers alike - as well as whether the sequel sitcom will be able to balance nostalgia with new material - remains to be seen. But, the genuine enthusiasm of those returning should offer fans some hope that Fuller House could capture the heart of Full House and work as a successful, standalone, series.
