Saturday Night Live took on yet another Disney classic, parodying Frozen 2 in a sketch showing “deleted scenes.” Saturday Night Live has been airing on NBC since 1975 and, along with political satire, SNL also parodies movies - and Disney is far from excluded from those sketches. One of SNL’s most renowned Disney parodies is its “Real Housewives of Disney Sketch” starring guest host Lindsay Lohan as Rapunzel with the rest of the SNL leading ladies playing the other princesses. SNL has also parodied movies like Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan and Aladdin. Frozen 2 is SNL’s next target.
The 2019 sequel to Frozen, Frozen 2 picked up where Frozen left off with Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven living in the Arendelle castle together. Elsa is lured by a mystical voice to go on an adventure to save her ancestors and unite the people of Arendelle with the indigenous people called the Nathuldran that were pushed off of their land. During that journey, Elsa meets a Nathuldran named Honeymaren. Although their first encounter is hostile, the women bond over their shared heritage and even sing a duet together. The friendship between them is strong, and some fans have speculated there’s more to their relationship. However, Disney was quick to label their connection as friendship.
This week’s episode of SNL features a Frozen 2 sketch parodying and poking fun at Disney’s animated movie. In it, Kate McKinnon plays a frustrated Elsa who just wants to be able to find love like every other female Disney protagonist. Elsa drops some not so subtle hints to her sister Anna, played by Cecily Strong, that she’s gay. Anna then, in classic Frozen fashion, bursts into song about how her family has known that Elsa is gay all along despite what Disney says. Watch the full sketch below.
More “deleted scenes” in SNL’s sketch poke fun at Disney’s attempts to use Frozen 2 as a way to show how woke it is. Kristoff, played by J.J. Watt, sings a song about how his most valuable attributes are being “big and woke” as throughout the movie, he is the antithesis to toxic masculinity. Another “deleted scene” attempts to explain how Lieutenant Mattias, the one person of color in the movie, ended up in Arendelle, and the characters give themselves a pat on the back for being diverse. The last scene shows a different side of Olaf growing up. Olaf enters with a second carrot hanging from the waist of the snowman, showing he is in the middle of puberty.
SNL nailed another hilarious parody proving that while Disney has come a long way, it still has a long way to go. Frozen 2 had a clunky plot line that was focused more on character development than a central narrative. SNL hit every fan complaint in a light-hearted matter. Despite the fact that SNL ratings are declining, there are a couple of standout sketches like this that keep the show going. Saturday Night Live picked up after its holiday hiatus on Feb. 1 with guest host Watt and will continue next week with RuPaul sashaying onto Feb. 8’s show as guest host.
