A deleted scene from Disney’s smash hit Frozen 2 finally gives an explanation for an unanswered question from the 2013 original. Last November, Frozen 2 finally debuted in theaters and soon became just as big of a success as the first film. With a current worldwide gross of $1.43 billion, Frozen 2 is the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The well-reviewed sequel follows Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Olaf (Josh Gad) as they travel north to uncover the mysteries of a long-forgotten enchanted forest.
Despite being its own self-contained story, Frozen 2 contained plenty of references to the first Frozen, the most notable one being Olaf’s dramatic retelling of Frozen’s plot. However, it turns out a small scene which would have offered an explanation for a plot point from the first film was cut. Some may have wondered why Elsa and Anna’s parents never told Anna the truth about Elsa’s powers. Following an incident when they were children, Anna had her memories of Elsa’s magic taken from her, leaving her completely in the dark about why her sister kept shutting her out. According to screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee, this was something Anna struggled with, the question of why her parents didn’t trust her.
As this new deleted scene from Frozen 2 shows, however, they did trust her. Shared by Disney Movies, the scene takes place near the end of the film, after Elsa returns from Ahtohallan. Gifted with the ability to see into the past, Elsa shows Anna a memory of their parents where they debate whether to tell Anna the truth about her beloved sister. They soon agree to tell her after they get back from their next trip, which can be assumed is the one they never return from. Check it out below:
As a result of Frozen 2’s massive success, many are wondering if a third film is just around the corner. Nothing has been confirmed, and Lee and her co-director Chris Buck have said the two films feel like a complete story. However, they also did not completely say no, leaving the door open for a third adventure should inspiration strike.
This deleted scene would have made a nice addition to the film, especially since it seems like a vital moment for Anna. Anna spent most of her life being shut out by Elsa and eventually discovered her whole family was keeping a massive secret from her. That’s bound to leave anyone with a lot of questions and insecurities, so it would have been sweet to see that Anna’s parents planned to tell her. Of course, not every moment can make it into a movie, and sadly this one was kept out of Frozen 2.
