It’s E3 2016 time, which naturally means cool game-related news and videos are being released seemingly by the hour. One hotly anticipated upcoming title is Friday the 13th: The Game, an interactive adaptation of the popular horror film franchise. Beginning life as a Kickstarter project, F13: The Game blew past its initial funding goals, and is now on target for a fall 2016 release. With the E3 festivities in full swing, developer Gun Media has seen fit to make F13: The Game’s first gameplay footage available to the masses, alternately casting players in the bulky shoes of infamous movie monster Jason Voorhees and one of his would be victims.

Still listed as being in a early alpha state, F13: The Game is - for now - an entirely multi-player experience, and offers players the option of either assuming control of Jason himself or one of a group of the franchise’s trademark oblivious teenage counselors. The object of the game is just as simple as the plot of the average Friday the 13th movie: Jason’s goal is to kill everyone in sight and the counselors’ goal is to desperately avoid getting killed by him long enough to escape and/or incapacitate him until the next go-around. A story-based single-player campaign has been considered by developers, but has yet to be implemented, so for now it’s all about survival of the fittest.

In the first part of the gameplay video above, an example of the Jason experience is shown. Mr. Voorhees appears to be dressed in his attire from Friday the Part III, the film where he acquired his now iconic hockey mask. The surrounding environment also appears to be a recreation of “Higgins Haven,” the house owned by the family of Dana Kimmell’s character in the aforementioned threequel. That property is of course adjacent to Jason’s Camp Crystal Lake stomping grounds, so naturally he is compelled to personally evict its new inhabitants.

Urged on by voice-over encouragement from mom Pamela - played by the late Betsy Palmer in the original F13 film - Jason is seen smashing heads, breaking backs, and other standard Jason power moves. With involvement from legendary horror FX creator Tom Savini, it’s likely these kills are but a small preview of the many methods of murder available to Jason in the game.

The second half of the video focuses on gameplay as a counselor, who does his best to hide from Jason within the traditional cabin setting, even turning on a radio playing very ’80s sounding rock music to try and distract the big lug. Unfortunately, Jason isn’t so easily fooled, and bursts through the door before stabbing right through the piece of furniture his prey is hiding under. To say that the atmosphere and feel of this footage screams Friday the 13th would be an understatement, and is sure to leave series fans grinning from ear to ear. It’s been nearly 30 years since Jason graced a game console, and it appears that his return will likely be fitting of his violent legacy.

Friday the 13th: The Game is planned to arrive on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in October 2016.
